<p><em>It was noticeable how few concepts in Detroit had complete interiors or were closed-off to viewing. But there are several interior trends making headway. The clear push for technological differentiation is one of the biggest stories, although for the full picture you needed to head to CES. But full adoption of user interface and connectivity is spreading throughout vehicles of all levels, entry-level to premium. Interior form language is being toned-down in line with that of the exteriors, as craftsmanship and high quality dictate simplified and more controllable designs and materials.</em></p>

Interior Form language</strong></em><br />
<em> Much like exterior design, vehicle interiors are becoming simpler and more inviting. The flowing forms in the Chrysler 700C and the Lexus LF-LC imitate water, calmly moving around the occupants, while many cabins allow surfaces and lines to continue onto the door panels. Instrument panels are featuring crisp edges with larger blends and radii, especially on surfaces closest to the occupants.</em></p>
<p><em><strong>Materials </strong></em><br />
<em> With higher quality becoming a key selling point for US carmakers, an emphasis on well-crafted interiors was evident in Detroit. Stitching is spreading onto instrument panels, while quilting is making a return to seating to depict both comfort and luxury. The layering of materials is being used in several vehicles, with Mercedes incorporating leather designs that mimic high-quality luggage and handbags. The most popular color was undoubtedly chocolate brown, with high contrast between light and dark.</em></p>
<p><em>And one trend that started on the interior is escaping onto the outside of the car, piano black plastic now bringing its high gloss to exterior detailing. In fact, the more forward-reaching the concept vehicle, the more glossy materials were found inside and out, like the Toyota NS4 and the Smart For-US. This is a direct result of hard, glossy surface materials appearing more and more on consumer electronics such as mobile phones and televisions.</em></p>
<p><em><strong>Technology</strong></em></p>
<p><em>Many vehicles, like the Tesla Model S and Ford Fusion are incorporating larger touch screens and minimizing usage of buttons. Other OEMs are focusing on containing the majority of the digital interface in the clusters (Cadillac) and reducing driver distraction away from the road with heads-up displays and voice activation (Audi). Both Cadillac&#8217;s ATS and the Dodge Dart showed reconfigurable visuals geared towards the different driving modes (and perhaps the driver&#8217;s preferences).</em></p>
<p><em>It might not all be good news, but at the center of the positive story is design and the designer. It was interesting to see Hyundai for instance, parade its new head of the Irvine studio, Chris Chapman, on stage during its press conference. This year, more than most, the designer was an influential piece in the puzzle, with OEMs touting their creatives as the 『go-to』 people when it comes to the development of new vehicles.</em></p>
<p><em>Design-led products were clear to see here, as more vehicles break free of the fallout from the economic meltdown. But while the worse may be over, there is still much to grapple with. Some brands are clearly still consolidating and it will be interesting to see whether Geneva exhibits greater evidence of designs that push the boundaries of what a vehicle can be.</em></p>

<p>Exterior Trends<br />
<em>Recently the trend has been towards softer forms, more purposeful lines, and emphasis on large and clean surfaces instead of narrow ribbons. The designs are, for the most part, becoming more toned-down and controlled as vehicle surfaces become secondary to stance and overall shape, which were shown in great variety in Detroit.</em></p>
<p><em> <strong>Softer Forms &amp; Graphics</strong></em><br />
<em> Several of the OEMs showed more organic form languages, a clear change of tack from the path the industry was taking just a couple of years ago. It&#8217;s a classic case of the cyclical transition from hard to soft forms (and vice-versa) that the industry has undergone for decades. The Dodge Dart, for instance, eschews the angular design of its Caliber predecessor in favor of a softer front fascia that seems to melt the headlamp and grille graphics into one piano-black canvas. Its surfacing is similarly – perhaps too – soft.</em></p>
<p><em> <strong>Taut lines</strong></em><br />
<em> Controlled, taut lines – both in graphic break-up and in form development – has come to signify premium-ness. It&#8217;s a direction that Mercedes-Benz first approached nearly a decade ago and Audi has since become the master of over the past 5 years. As expected, this is filtering down through the industry to those aspiring to join the elite. And so the new 2013 Fusion, which takes on more of Ford&#8217;s Kinetic 2.0 design language displays lines pulled aggressively from the front to the rear. The Honda Accord displayed a similar trait in its shoulder line. It&#8217;s a very sketch-like direction, with long controlled strokes along the body. The Cadillac ATS and the Lincoln MKZ concept utilize the theme in their silhouettes for a more elegant, streamlined appearance.</em></p>
<p><em> <strong>Attention to surfacing</strong></em><br />
<em> Another emergent trend is the extra attention being given to surface development, resulting in more sculptural vehicles such as the Lexus LF-LC concept. It exercises exquisite surface modeling by mixing undulating forms with tight lines that taper and fold into each other, particularly around its lamps, exhausts and air intakes. The combination of convex and concave surfaces catches highlights and reflections for increased drama. Acura&#8217;s NSX concept takes a different approach by incorporating larger, flatter surfaces along the body that layer over each other, creating visual strength without excessive visual weight.</em></p>

<em>If you do someone a good turn today, don’t expect a thank you. ‘Cheers’, ‘ta’ or even ‘wicked’ is the more likely response, if a survey is to be believed. Research among computer users suggests that the traditional expression of gratitude has fallen by the wayside.</em></p>

<p><em>Almost half of those polled said they now use ‘cheers’ more often than ‘thank you’. Four out of ten said ‘thank you’ sounded too formal &#8211; so they used more catchy, chatty words such as ‘fab’, ‘lovely’ or ‘wicked’. </em></p>

<p><em>A third said they would often just resort to a quick wave instead of saying ‘thank you’. And 77 per cent said that any of the words used to say thanks were irrelevant, believing a pleasant gesture works just as well. The poll of 3,000 people was carried out by the online gift store Me to You.</em></p>
